heXentafl is a hexagonal variant of Hnefatafl where the attackers try to capture the king and the defenders try to guide the king to one of the six corners.
The size 4 and 5 hex-hex boards are supported. Note that on the smaller board, the king may only move one step at a time, while on the larger board, the king may move like any other piece.
A hexagonal Hnefatafl: attackers hunt the king; defenders escort the king to a corner.
Inventor: Kevin Kane
Published listing: BoardGameGeek: heXentafl.
Repeating a position (same board and player to move) twice is a draw.
Default hexhex size 4. King starts in the centre with defenders; attackers occupy the rim. Size 5 uses a larger array and a longer-range king.
Pieces slide any distance through empty hexes (on size 4 the king steps only one hex). Capture by sandwiching an enemy between two of yours along a line. Special sandwich geometry applies on corners (for warriors) and on the throne (for the king).
Captures are mandatory when the engine lists them as part of the move notation.
Default. King moves one step.
Larger board; the king moves like other pieces.
