Stawvs

A set-collection game for 2–4 players in the spirit of Amazons, with old-style Volcano scoring. On a checkerboard randomly filled with individual pyramids, player pieces move and capture pyramids in a straight line, if every intervening space and the target hold pyramids but not pieces.

Inventor: Russ Williams

Rules

See Looney Pyramids wiki: Stawvs and BoardGameGeek.

Goal

When every player has passed (all are eliminated from further moves), score trees (trios of small/medium/large pyramids) and leftover pyramids. Highest score wins; ties share the win.

Point values: 7 per monochrome tree, 5 per mixed tree, 1 per loose pyramid.

Setup

A checkerboard is randomly filled with Icehouse pyramids, leaving the four corner spaces empty. Each player has one or more moving caps. Variants change holes, randomness, piece count, and whether final pyramids under caps are collected.

Gameplay

Move a cap any distance orthogonally or diagonally onto a pyramid, only if every square you pass through (and the landing square) has a pyramid but no other cap. Captured pyramids go into your collection.

If you have no more moves, you will be autopassed for the remainder of the game, but you will still score your final pieces and potentially win.

Variants

Setup Variants

Center Hole

A hole is left in the center of the setup (hole) rather than empty spaces at the corners.

Random Gaps

Four spaces are scattered randomly on the board.

Gameplay Variants

Simpler captures

Hey That’s My Fish–style movement constraints. This means you do not have a choice which pyramid to collect; you must collect the pyramid you just left.

2 pieces each

This variant uses two caps per player instead of three.

Scoring Variants

No final captures

Pyramids under caps at the end are not collected or scored.
