Azacru

A territory-control game where directional pieces navigate a subdivided board to claim cells.

Inventor: Mike Wellman

Rules

Published listing: BoardGameGeek: Azacru.

Goal

Control the most claimed tiles when the game ends. All players tied for the highest tile count share the win.

Setup

2–4 players on a Pacru-style board divided into territories. Each player starts with chevron pieces on assigned cells, each facing a set direction.

Gameplay

On your turn, move one of your chevrons. A chevron slides along its facing or at a 45° angle to either side, up to a distance equal to its move power — the number of your tiles in its home territory, minimum 1.

You may not land on an enemy tile or on another chevron. Empty cells and your own tiles are legal destinations.

Landing on an empty cell claims that tile for you. Some moves that connect two of your territories claim or convert tiles along the path; connecting across enemy ground may sacrifice the moving chevron.

After a move that changes border control, you may reorient the chevron 45° left (<), 45° right (>), or keep its bearing (^).

If you cannot move any chevron, you may pass. The first pass starts the endgame: once every other player has had one turn, play returns to the passer and the game ends.

Each player scores one point per tile they control. Highest score wins; tied leaders all win.
