Frogger

A multiplayer game for the Decktet along the lines of Cartagena, named after a classic video game, but not either of the the official licensed tabletop versions of the video game.

The Crocodiles variant is by Jorge Arroyo, the translator of the English rules.

The Advanced rules and other minor variants are by P. D. Magnus; they appear in The Decktet Book, where the game is called Xing.

Due to how randomization works at Abstract Play, forced passes are needed for a player to refill the market in the middle of his turn. These are handled by the server, but a variant for the market has also been added to avoid forced passing, in which the market refills after (rather than during) the turn in which a player empties it.

Frogger

A Decktet race inspired by the video game Frogger and the board game Cartagena. Move your six frogs along a path of suit cards and get them all home first.

Inventor: José Carlos de Diego Guerrero

Rules

Goal

Be the first to have all six of your frogs on your home space (the last column of your row).

Setup

2–5 players. A track of Decktet cards is laid in a row (default 12 path cards plus Excuse start and home; Advanced uses 10 path cards). Each path card shows its suits on the rows beneath. Each player’s six frogs start stacked on the Excuse (start) of their row.

Each player is dealt a hidden hand of 4 cards. Remaining cards form the deck. An open draw pool of 6 cards is dealt.

Player 1 starts. Each turn you have three actions.

Gameplay

Forward

Play a card from your hand to advance one of your frogs to the next unoccupied matching-suit space on your row (or the next space of one of the card’s suits). Ace and Crown also bounce other players’ frogs sharing that column back to their Excuse (not crocodiles). Discard the played card.

Backward

Move a frog back to the previous legal space. You may then take a card from the draw pool, if the pool is not empty. Except in the Free swim variant, the claimed card must share a suit with the space you left. You may request a refill of the pool as part of this action.

You are “blocked” if all your frogs are already at Home or on the Excuse and you have no cards. In this case you do not have to move a frog to draw.

All new cards come from the open pool, so player hands gradually become public information.

Variants

Advanced

Uses a shorter track and a stricter move-forward rule: you must move to the first card matching any suit on your played card. This variant is equivalent to the game Xing in The Decktet Book.

Crocodiles

Pawns on the path hold hungry crocodiles that advance at the end of each round, sending frogs they land on back to the Excuse.

Courts

Add the four Courts to the deck. (Courts have three suits to choose from.)

Courts for Pawns

Swap the roles of Pawns and Courts for variety.

Free swim

There is no suit restriction when claiming a draw-pool card after a backward move.

Refills/No refills

Refills are the default. The draw pool may be refilled during your turn. (The server will insert an automatic pass so the shuffle can happen mid-turn.)

In the no-refills variant, the pool does not refill until the next player’s turn.
