WUNCHUNK

Wunchunk is an abstract strategy game for 2 to 4 players. In Wunchunk, players aim to unify their pieces as much as they can by the end of the game, while keeping their pieces separate early on so as to increase their power.

WUNCHUNK RULES IN BRIEF (full rules with illustrated examples are available at https://tinyurl.com/wunchunk-rules)

Players take turns placing stones on a hexhex board, until the board is full or until all players pass consecutively. Groups of like-colored stones are chunks if they contain TWO or more stones; single stones are merely crumbs. The winner is the player with the fewest CHUNKS in their color of stones at the end of the game. In the case of a tie in the number of chunks, tied players compare their number of CRUMBS; the player with the fewest crumbs wins.

(If the number of crumbs is also tied, then players compare their number of groups consisting of exactly TWO stones; the player with the fewest size-2 groups wins. If the players have the same number of size-2 groups, then they compare size-3 groups; the player with the fewest size-3 group wins – and if need be, players keep comparing groups on up through the various sizes until the tie is broken.)

The initial board configuration begins with each player having one chunk already on the board. (Refer to the full rules for an illustration of the starting configuration.) On their turn, a player is allotted a number of stones equal to their current number of chunks on the board. A player may play any number of stones from 0 (a pass) up to their allotted number. A player may play any color of stone (even an opponent's color); multiple stones can be any color or color mix.

Balancing Rule: In order to offset an advantage for Player 1, there is the following restriction: when placing their second single stone, Player 1 cannot place this stone in a way that creates a second chunk in their color.

OPEN START VARIATION

In this variation for the two player game, the board starts out completely empty. One player is randomly chosen to be the “The Placer” and the other player to be “The Chooser.” The Placer places four stones on the board: two adjacent stones of the same color anywhere on the board, and then two adjacent stones of the other color anywhere on the board. After these placements, the Chooser next chooses which color they wish to play. Red plays first, no matter what choice the Chooser makes. From this point onwards, all the rules of Wunchunk are the same as in the default game.

(If you have customized colors in Abstract Play and you no longer use red/blue, then whichever color you have replaced red with will move first. This will be the color listed on the left in the Moves columns.)

Wunchunk draws inspiration from Yodd by Luis Bolaños Mures (in its unification goal and the freedom to play an opponent's color) and Catchup by Nick Bentley (in allowing the trailing player to play more stones).

Rules

Published listing: BoardGameGeek: Wunchunk.

Goal

The game ends when the board is full or every player has passed in succession. Rank players by fewest groups of size ≥ 2, then by how many groups of each size they have (lexicographic). Lowest encoded score wins (ties possible).

Setup

Hexhex default 6. 2–4 players.

Gameplay

Place a chunk of your colour: a connected set of empty cells whose size is determined by how many separate groups you currently have (more groups → larger, more powerful placements). Details follow the BGG listing.

Hexhex 5 / 6 / 7 / 8

7 and 8 are for 3–4 players.

Open start
